Bungoma on high alert over Ebola threat

Bungoma - The Ministry of Health in Bungoma is on high alert and has put in place special measures to curb the spread of Ebola from West Africa, Grace Khayota, the County Executive Committee (CEC) member in charge of Health and Sanitation has said.
Speaking to journalists in Bungoma, Khayota said stakeholders in the health sector in the region are not taking chances, considering that the county is at the international border.
“Among the interventions and special measures we have put in place is setting up an isolation ward at the Bungoma County Referral Hospital and another at Lwakhakha Dispensary that is at the border with Kenya and Uganda,” she said.
“We have put the special measures just in case anyone with the highly contagious virus enters the country. We do not want to be caught unawares,” she added.
Khayota said they expect to receive special kits from Nairobi this week that will be used by health practitioners in the two health facilities while attending to Ebola victims incase the virus is reported in the region.
The Bungoma CEC assurance of preparedness against the virus that has no cure comes days after the World Health Organization (WHO) certified Kenya as a high-risk country.
Ebola has killed over 1 000 people since March in West African countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinnea and Nigeria.
Health Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia has been on record defending the country’s preparedness to tackle the Ebola virus.
Macharia last week said that all entry points, including the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) are properly manned and public health officials can identify anyone with the virus and isolate them to prevent an outbreak of the fatal disease.
