Bungoma - Leaders from Bungoma County are working together to ensure that there are no cases of Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) in the region and other challenges facing the education of the girl child, area women Representative Reginalda Wanyonyi has said.
Dr Wanyonyi said that FGM especially in Mt Elgon has fueled the high number of drop out rates among school going children and underage pregnancies, as the girls opt to get married after they undergo the outdated cultural practice.
Speaking yesterday in Cheptais Sub-County at a forum attended by the chairperson of the Anti- FGM Board Linah Jebii Kilimo, Wanyonyi said the retrogressive culture is to blame for the plights facing the girl child.

"This year alone we had over 90 underage pregnancies and many others go unreported. FGM is partly to blame and this practice ought to be stopped once and for all, as it negatively affects the future lives of the girl child," said the women MP.
"I am happy that all the leaders from the county, especially those from Mt Elgon have been in the forefront in championing for the end of the FGM and even vocal condemning underage pregnancies which has given the region a bad name," added the legislator.
Mrs Kilimo who earlier paid Bungoma County Governor Ken Lusaka a courtesy call at his office said her anti-FGM board will closely work with leaders from the region to end cases of FGM.
" I am happy that the leadership of Bungoma County government has realized the challenges facing the girl child in the region and they invited us here. We shall work together to ensure that girls and women from the region do not undergo cultural practices like FGM," said the former legislator.
She said her board will soon conduct sensitization campaigns in conjunction with the county government, targeting school girls and also other members of the community to make the residents aware on the law on the prevention of FGM.
