Brothers accused of brutally killing grandfather

04 June 2012, 11:40 Oduor Omondi

Two brothers were yesterday arraigned before a Kisumu court for allegedly beating up their 78 year old grandfather to death.

Appearing before Judge H. K Chemitei, James Wasonga Ochieng alias Jim and Daniel Otieno Ochieng were accused of murdering their grandfather, Osolo Ochieng on May14 in Uungu village in Ugenya District.

Testifying before the court, Mrs. Mary Adhiambo Omondi, the deceased’s wife recounted how her husband was beaten to death by his two grandsons after they claimed to have seen him scooping soil from the grave of their dead mother. Apparently, this is an action culturally interpreted to mean he was to blame for her death.

After seeing him doing this, the young men in their middle ages stripped their grandfather naked and stubbed him severally on the head with a piece of wood.

Emotions ran high in the jammed court as crowds gathered to catch a glimpse at the two brothers.

The frail Mama Mary Omondi recounted to the court of how Daniel Otieno Ochieng ran back to their house, fetched a sharp machete before brutally butchering the deceased’s head.

She said her late husband was taken to Busia District Hospital, before being referred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for scanning of the head and further treatment. The deceased however succumbed to the injuries due to excessive bleeding.

The case was adjourned until June 28, 2012 when it will be mentioned again as the court gathers more evidence.

The two brothers have been remanded.
