Britain and Luo Nyanza come together
04 December 2014, 21:14
Nairobi - For those of you who have never heard of the Owinyo Sigoma
Band before, I am sure you are pretty convinced that it is 100% Kenyan and from
the Luo Nyanza region.
Well, though the name is from the Western part of Kenya,
the band isn't entirely Kenyan, composed of a mixture of Britons and Kenyans.
It has grown to become one of the most appreciated musical groups in the world,
bringing to it a flare that had been missing from the cultural music scene.
The band was formed in 2009 after a group of musicians from
the UK travelled to Kenya to collaborate with Kenyan musicians.
(keys), Louis Hackett (bass), Sam Lewis (guitar) and Tom Skinner
(drums) came to Nairobi to partner with Joseph
Nyamungu and Charles Owoko, two local cultural artists. The result of
their collaboration they have grown to become one of the most recognized groups
in the UK.
They make their way back to Kenya to preform live at the RVF
sessions, backed up by Dj Mr. Sean and Blinky Bill on the decks.
