Breaking: Court stops TSC from hiring 70,000 teachers

Nairobi - The High Court has stopped the Teachers Service Commision TSC from hiring 70,000 emergency teachers.
This follows an application by the Trade Union Congress of Kenya, saying that the move would compromise education standards in the country as well as build an already tense situation even further considering the ongoing teachers strike.
The High Court stated Friday that the move by TSC was indeed done in haste and topped it whilst an application by the Congress is heard next week.
TSC said it would hire teachers for a period of three months to ensure that the education sector, which is currently in limbo is not left out further especially with national exams around the corner.
" The move is necessary to ensure that the upcoming examinations are held in the right mood and manner and that our children can continue learning whilst the talks on teachers pay continue," TSC chairlady Lydia Nzomo said.
Teachers have been on a near 6 week strike to protest lack of government payment of a 50/60% payrise effected by the Labour Court.
