Kampala - Six policemen who have been manning the Malaba border have been arrested for sleeping on the job.
This came following an incident where a vehicle with stolen Kenyan registration number plate sneaked into Uganda under mysterious circumstances.
Police are hunting for two other policemen who ran away after learning about their colleagues' arrest.
Bukedi region police commander, Peter Kakonge said that the policemen were arrested because they failed to thoroughly screen the vehicle that carried people suspected to be high profile criminals.
Kakonge said, ''The arrested policemen are detained at Malaba police station. We arrested them because they failed to put in place measures to detect and arrest four occupants of a strange Toyota Land cruiser which entered the country from Kenya through the border point.''
He said that the six policemen will appear before the police disciplinary tribunal on charges of neglecting duty.
He added that investiagations so far carried out after intercepting the vehicle indicate that the number plate belong to a Honda car in Kenya.
Those arrested in the vehicle had reportedly disguised the registration numbers to evade arrest by Kenyan security who were trailing them before they sneaked into Uganda.
