Kwale - Security officials and political leaders in Kwale County have urged boda boda operators to name criminals among them as well as police officer who take bribes.
Kwale County Commissioner Evans Achoki, Msambweni OCPD Joseph Omijah and Bongwe Gombato ward representative Omar Boga said boda boda operators should name their colleagues who perpetrate criminal activities in the area.
The trio also urged the operators to disclose police officers who are corrupt which is among other things contributing to deteriorating security in the area.
They were speaking at Ukunda showground Thursday when they met over 300 boda boda operators from Diani tourist town in Msambweni sub-county.
County commissioner Evans Achoki said that boda boda operators should take responsibility of ensuring the region, noting that security of the country is the responsibility of every citizen.
On his side, Msambweni OCPD Joseph Omijah said there is need for registration of all boda boda operators in the town in a bid to stem insecurity.
“That will enable us to identify criminals amongst you. We should also reduce the time used by operators from midnight to 9:00pm in the evening,” he said.
Gombato ward representative Omar Boga echoed Achoki and Omijah's sentiments saying that there is need for cooperation between police and the boda boda operators in the area.
“The national government is doing its best to ensure there is security but cooperation is vital among all stakeholders,” he added.
Diani has been experiencing a wave of insecurity with most criminals using boda boda who have not yet been identified.
