Boda boda operators demonstrate against OCS

24 December 2014, 10:34 Magdalyn Mwaniki

Nakuru - More than 100 boda boda operators in Njoro sub-County early Tuesday held a demonstration against the area OCS claiming he has been harassing and arresting them for no reason.

The operators paralysed business at Njoro trading centre for hours where they demanded that the OCS be transferred immediately as he has made it hard for them to fend for their families.

One of the operators, John Kinyanjui, said that the OCS has been physically abusing them especially at night.

“The officer hit me with a club after he found me operating at night leaving me with injuries. This has been happening to other operators as well,” he lamented.

A week ago, the area security team banned boda boda operations beyond 9:00 pm.

The operators said that the ban is impacting negatively on them because this is the peak season owing to festivities.

However, Njoro OCPD Fredrick Lai said that the operators will not be allowed to work beyond 9.00pm as this would encourage crime in the region.

He added that the decision to impose the ban was reached after wide consultations adding that crime rate had reduced since the ban was effected.

The operators' representative, Paul Mburu said that the officer has not been following the right procedure in handling the matter.

He added that there are laws that should be followed in arresting the offenders.

“Fear of the harassment has led to a number of accidents as a result of speeding as they try to escape,” said Mburu.
