Bio-safety Authority supports GMOs ban

The National Bio-safety Authority (NBA) has drawn its weight behind the government's move to ban the consumption of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in Kenya.
Addressing the press during their 2nd National Bio-safety Conference themed "Bio-safety Advocacy for realization of Vision 2030", Willy Tonui, the NBA Director said that they will only support the consumption of GMO products after the government's approval.
"NBA supports the government's ban of consumption of GMO products to protect lives of its citizens, and will back the move for consumption after safety approval by the respective government's body," said Tonui.
Tonui said that NBA has established offices around Kenya's borders in collaboration with National Bureau of Standards (NBS) to scrutinize the importation of GMO products in the country in a bid to protect citizens.
Despite government's much support for biotechnological innovation, Tonui said that inadequate resources, misconception on biotechnology products and unawareness on health issues concerning GMO products are some of challenges hampering its growth.
"Currently, no GMO foods are commercialised in Kenya for consumption because they are yet to be approved for human use other than a few approved drugs," remarked Tonui.
He added that NBA will be in the forefront of initiating and implementing bio-security regulatory laws to ensure people are safe from consuming unapproved GMO products.
Tonui further urged citizens to be environment-conscious in fostering proper disposal and management of wastes to ensure the environment is hazard-free.
