Beware Of Disguised Hawkers

09 August 2012, 16:31Kelvin Mureithi

Meru town central business community has urged the local municipal council to put appropriate official measures in place to guarantee them of security on their property against the increasing number of hawkers in the town center.

A prominent businessman anonymously observed that the number of street hawkers had drastically increased in the recent past saying it was very difficult to tell a genuine hawker from a fake one.He said that especially now that the National events are on in the town, the visitors should be so keen as not to conned.

The concerned businessman also alleged that some of those posing as hawkers could be potential robbers who were on a surveying mission of well established business premises during the day only to lead their accomplices into breaking and stealing at night.

It was also observed that the number of glue sniffing men and boys was on an increasing trend with many of them pretending to be out of their minds due to the stuff in their dirty plastic bottles.

The concerned town business giants appealed for urgent intervention from the local municipal council officials to enable them run their businesses with some ease and assurance to their self and property safety.

The council was also challenged to ensure there was sustained general public security within the town and its environs along with proper garbage collection and waste management for purposes of giving the town the cleanliness it deserves to make it appealing to residents and visitors.

The business community further pointed out that the Meru municipal council had an obligation to protect residents and visitors against any form of lawlessness among other petty social disorders such as pick pocketing which was said to be on the increase this time round.
