'Be wary of hippo attacks'

Kisumu East DC Willy Cheboi has asked residents living near Lake Victoria to be wary of hippo attacks especially at night.
Cheboi said that the prevailing flood situation in the area has seen creatures otherwise living in the water venture out in search of food hence invading human settlement.
He however said that the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers are on the alert and are taking measures to get the wild animals back to the lake.
Cheboi cited last week’s incident in which a middle aged man was attacked by a hippo at his farm in Dunga.
The hippo is said to have emerged from the lake, which is next to the farm, and attacked the man.
The animal charged toward him, tossed him to the ground before running back into the lake.
The man is still recuperating at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The red flag has also been raised in Bondo District where six fishermen were attacked by a rogue herd of hippos.
A small fishing escapade at Goye village, Usenge Division, in Bondo district almost turned tragic on Friday when the fishermen’s canoe was overturned upside down dumping them into the deep waters.
The four managed to swim and cling onto the overturned canoe for several hours. They were later rescued by the crew of another boat and taken ashore to Usenge Beach fish landing site.
