Be prepared for El Nino, Ruto tells Kenyans

08 September 2015, 19:04 William Korir

Nairobi - Deputy President William Ruto says that Kenyans should be prepared for the upcoming El Nino rains, saying that they might cause havoc.

The heavy rains are expected to take place from starting October and according to veterinary officers, are expected to be the biggest seen in a number of years.

According to Ruto, the government has set aside a plan to deal with the rains.

" We are already setting aside plans to deal with the rains. We are also urging Kenyans to be ready to face them, because they are in a position to take charge of the situation early," he stated.

He also said that the government has set aside a KES 5 billion kitty to deal with preparation for and disaster planning.

" It is important that we be ready. Farmers especially must be ready for the rains and we are urging the local governments to set aside facilities to save the water and use it for irrigation later," he added.

He also said that there was likely-hood that some Kenyans would be forced out of their homes due to the rain.

The Kenya Meteorological Services has warned of heavy rains and flooding in October, November and December.

It is also expected that the rains will run into January 2016.
