Bars in Ukunda to close early

27 August 2013, 11:16 John Kioko

Bars in Ukunda and Msambweni district will now be closing at 9:00 PM in the evening for security reasons.

The move follows surge in criminal incidents that have rocked the tourist town of Ukunda for some weeks now, forcing business people to operate in fear.

Msambweni MP Suleiman Dori said they have agreed with security officials that anybody found operating past 9:00 pm will be arrested.

Dori was speaking in Msambweni over the weekend, after chairing a security meeting with the business community and security officials in the area.

“We want to ensure the area is safe for every business person because they are important to our economy and that is why I have decided to meet with them and come up with a way forward,” he said.

Dori went on to add that the bars will be operating from 2:00 pm according to the Mututho law, but closing earlier at 9:00 pm instead of 11:00 pm.

Dori said the restrictions will continue for some days until security officials are sure that the area is secure enough for bars to close at 11:00 PM.

He urged residents and business community to cooperate with the police.

In recent weeks some business people have been robbed at gun point both at night and during the day, by a three armed gang who use a motorcycle to escape, making it difficult for police to trace them.

The police have also been blamed for laxity and the residents have called for the immediate transfer of long serving officers in the area.

Msambweni DC Benjamin Leparmorijo said they will enforce the law to ensure everyone is safe appealing to motorcyclists in the area to avoid being used by criminals to steal from area residents.
