Bandits shift from cattle rustling to land grabbing

19 December 2014, 10:00 Robert Chepkwony

Turkana - Amidst high tension in various parts of Baringo and Turkana counties due to fears of bandit attacks, residents in the targeted areas are worried after the bandits appear to have changed the trend from cattle rustling to evicting people from their land.

Loruk, Lomelo and Chemoe are some of the areas hard hit by the bandit attacks that have seen residents flee their homes.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that one person was killed on Wednesday night by armed bandits who managed to escape.

"Things are so bad here... I have spoken to one of my colleagues who hiding in the bush," a resident of Chemolingot who declined to be named for fear of victimization said.

The Marigat-Loruk road was also barricaded for a few hours by angry youths paralyzing transport to Tiaty.

It’s alleged that the bandits are shot at residents to scare them away from their homes so that they could occupy the area.

Richard Chepjomei who is the resident of that area said that they are worried because the bandits have changed their game and they are now targeting land.

“It’s no longer the culture of cattle rustling but it has turned that the bandits are after our land and we don’t know what will happen next,” said the Chepjomei.

“We are worried as the residents as we don’t know our next fate because these culprits are going to take as they are making sure they are flashing us out from our land,” he added.

He said they were attacked by five bandits on Wednesday evening and were saved by but the KDF and the Anti-stock Unit.
