Bandits rob passengers

28 November 2012, 14:13 Alloys Musyoka

Nine passengers traveling from Mombasa to Mandera on Monday night escaped death narrowly after bandits attacked them at Bilbil area in Bura constituency, Tana River North district and robbed them of their mobile phones, cash among other valuable items.

Tana River North District police boss Joseph Tonui said the bandits shot the vehicle which the passengers were traveling in, a Toyota Hilux pick up, after the driver refused to stop.

"The bandits ordered the driver to stop and since it was at night he defied orders and instead sped off but the militia fired at the cars' radiator forcing it to stop," explained the OCPD.

He said no passenger was injured during the incident but their properties were all robbed off.

Tonui noted that they are pursuing the bandits stating that they have not arrested any person in connection to the night attacks in the area so far.

He also pointed out that they could not respond to the incident quickly.

"When my officers reached the place the gang had left because it was too late. There is no network coverage and the roads is in bad conditions and that made it difficult for our officers to trace the armed men," he noted.

He advised locals traveling using the road to avoid traveling at night since the road is often misused by bandits.

Tonui observed that since the road is in bad condition with potholes all over, drivers are forced to slow down making it easy to fall a prey to the bandits.

In the recent past, cases of bandit attacks along Bura Garissa road had reduced after an administration officer shot dead one of the bandits in the area.

Security officers have assured locals that they are doing their best to arrest the situation.
