Bandits kill two women in Kapedo, make away with herds

13 February 2015, 14:24 Robert Chepkwony

Kapedo - Tension and grief engulfed Kapedo early Thursday after armed bandits suspected to be from the Pokot community shot dead two women near Kapedo A camp before making away with an unknown number of goats.

In the mid-morning incident, it is said the bandits took advantage of the relaxed environment to attack women who were herding by shooting indiscriminately.

Confirming the incident, Kapedo AP camp in charge Inspector, John Bwire said the police engaged the bandits for quite some hours before they disappeared.

“It was around 10am when the bandits raided herds boys and women just behind Lomelo Primary School, near our AP camp. They shot the two women but our officers rushed to counter them where there was serious exchange of fire for quite some hours,” said Bwire in a phone call interview.

The incidence comes merely a week after armed bandits shot dead four people and left five with serious injuries in Lomelo.

Joshua Loyanai, the Turkana East ward development coordinator said that the bandits were taking advantage of the GSU and AP officers’ reluctance to attack the villagers.

The officers only patrol the Kapedo-Chemolingot-Marigat route, but fear the Kapedo-Lomelo which is currently under the bandits’ hands,” he said, noting it is through intervention of the KDF who clear the road for the police to patrol the route.

He called on the government to consider massive deployment of KDF officers to prevent further killings of innocent people and cattle rustling.
