Awendo MP lambastes ODM over Magerer attack

04 November 2014, 08:16 Oduor Omondi

Awendo - Awendo MP Jared K'Opiyo has rebuked a section of members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party for allegedly assaulting the party’s executive director Lang’at Magerer.

K’Opiyo led elected leaders from his constituency in condemning the violence that was witnessed during a Cord meeting at the Orange House in Nairobi, Thursday last week.

The leaders said what was witnessed was a shame and that the aggression wrongly painted ODM as a party that is full of political intolerance.

K’Opiyo, a Ford Kenya MP, asked ODM party leaders to take responsibility for what happened when rowdy youths accosted Magerer and forcefully ejected him from the meeting in the presence of ODM leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka.

He said such act was unfortunate and would never be tolerated in the present times where all people regardless of their political views should be tolerated.

“As we condemn the act in the strongest terms possible, we also demand that thorough investigations be conducted by both the party top rank and the police to bring to book all those who perpetrated such the heinous act on Magerer," he said.

Terming the act as shameful and a sign of cowardice, the legislator said such incidents augured badly for the nation as it “takes us back to the dark days when people would never be allowed to express their views freely.”

He was speaking at Gamba during the commissioning of two school buses funded by Awendo CDF.

Others who addressed the meeting included members of Migori County Assembly Philip Odero (East Sakwa), Timon Mbogo(Sakwa West), Johnson Owiro (Central Sakwa), and Eunita Kokeyo (Nominated MCA).

“Magerer is a husband and a father and if that is how we can humiliate our leaders, then we have to review our standing in society where we claim that democratic space is sufficient for us all,” said Odero.

The leaders put on notice leaders whom they accused of being fond of using the youth to cause chaos for them to achieve their selfish interests.
