Association to lobby against bills
11 December 2012, 12:10
The Kenya Livestock Producers Association is opposing the Alfa Plus four Bills that have been tabled in Parliament to harmonize Livestock and Agriculture operations.
Speaking to the media in Meru town on Sunday, the Association’s Chief Executive Officer Patrick Kimani said the bills if passed will put the Livestock and Agricultural sectors in disarray making the Livestock sub sector irrelevant.
He said the Livestock sub sector was an important part of the country’s economy saying it generates 100 billion shillings annually towards the country’s economic growth.
Kimani said stakeholders of the Agriculture and Livestock industry were not consulted when the bills were being formulated saying the Kenya Livestock Producers Association will not support them.
He pointed out that among the contentious issues included in the bill is that the associations aligned to the Agriculture and Livestock sectors have to be registered with the government for them to operate and this will deny them their rights as an association.
He added that stakeholders in the agriculture and livestock sector have consulted with the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture with a view of having Members of Parliament oppose the bills.
