Aspirant turns violent during nominations

21 January 2013, 09:37 James Kabotia

A row erupted at the Laikipia East TNA tallying centre just before the results of Mp nominee were announced.

Minutes before the announcement, John Kiama Githinji and his agents demanded that the votes be counted afresh alleging that the exercise had been rigged in favour of his opponent Anthony Mutahi Kimaru.

The two aspirants had camped at the Nanyuki Social Hall on Friday night until Saturday when the counting process continued.

Drama unfolded at the last minute when Kiama angrily tore off the result papers before the TNA Laikipia East nomination coordinator Cecilia Wambui Mburugu.

Despite tight security at the hall, Kiama and his supporters hurled chairs anyhow but nobody was injured in the melee.

Laikipia East police boss Joshua Lutukai and his team managed to kick him out of the tallying centre but Mutahi and his agents remained calm, vehemently waiting for the results.

Silence engulfed the hall as the election board repeated the counting of votes process from the torn off papers.

Within one hour, Mburugu declared Anthony Mutahi the winner with 8 275 votes against his close opponent John Kiama who gathered 8 127 votes.

Mburugu said that the entire nomination process in the constituency was free and fair.

She also said that such form of indiscipline should not be condoned adding that action will be taken against Kiama.
