A group of over 20 Chinese children yesterday traveled to UNEP headquarters in Gigiri to receive their first-place prizes in the 5th Chinese Children’s Painting Competition.
The young artists beat competition from over 600,000 Chinese schoolchildren to win the competition.
UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner presented the children with their awards at a special ceremony on the UN compound.
The children were joined by youth from the Mathare Community Education and Development Organization for the award ceremony. The two groups later took part in inter-cultural activities focusing on the environment.
The Chinese Children’s Painting Competition, organized by UNEP and the Luo Hong Fund, has attracted over 2.2 million entries from young people across China since 2008.
