Nairobi - The fire at the Gikomba Market was started by arsonists, Nairobi Police Boss Benson Kibue has said.
Kibue said that the fire, which started at 3 AM local time early Tuesday morning was intentionally started according to investigations by police officers.
" The fire was started by someone. We have concluded that it was intentional. Why someone would target Gikomba is what we are trying to find out, Kibue told News24 at the site if the fire.
By the time of going to press, the fire was still raging in the expansive market, known for its second hand clothes and merchandise.
Kibue also said that so far, 70% and above of the market has been burnt to the ground.
" It is sad that the market has been consumed this badly. We are trying to end it as quickly as possible," he added.
He also confirmed that no one had been killed or injured in the fire, probably due to its timing, so early in the day.
Traders usually arrive at the market from 4 AM.
