Armed youth lodge daring attack on Nyali barracks

02 November 2014, 11:06 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - Armed youth lodged a daring attack on the Nyali Barracks in Mombasa as the country's security apparatus comes under scrutiny for its lack of intelligence.

The youths, numbering 10 attacked the barracks Sunday morning and seriously injured a Navy officer before a response team killed 6 of the attackers and the others escaped.

It is understood that after the attack, the officers pursued the attackers in a nearby forest and killed one more.

Wielding machetes, the motive of the attack is yet to be known, but the move to attack the barracks has raised alarm levels in the city.

The attack comes just hours after more than 20 GSU officers were killed in Kapedo, Turkana on a mission to chase and apprehend bandits.

And with the attacks, the security apparatus in the country is under increasing pressure over the spate of unwarranted deaths, with president Uhuru Kenyatta expected to address members of the public on the attacks later on Sunday.
