A middle aged man was on Tuesday night shot dead by unknown people at Kapchebon Village in Mt. Elgon District at the border of Bungoma and Trans - Nzoia County, after being robbed of his mobile phone and KES 1 000 cash.
The armed thugs who struck the home of the deceased, a livestock trader, just a few minutes to 8pm later abducted his wife and gang raped her in a maize plantation after shooting the husband.
She was rushed to Kapsokwony District Hospital where she is recuperating.
The thugs are said to have demanded KES 100 000 from the prominent livestock businessman, who had just arrived from the Kamukuywa Market, an amount he did not have. Tuesday is the market day at Kamukuywa.
Mt. Elgon OCPD John Onditi confirmed the incident and said a manhunt for the killers has been launched. He appealed to members of the public with any information that can lead to the arrest of the thugs to volunteer it to security agents.
“Two thugs, one armed with an AK 47 Assault rifle and another with a club, attacked the family at about 7:45 PM. They shot Kennedy Saekwo, 31, after he failed to produce the KES 100 000 they were demanding. They later dragged his wife to the banks of River Kamukuywa and raped her in turns and fled,” narrated Onditi.
Police officers took the body of the deceased to Cherangany Nursing Hospital Mortuary for preservation.
Local leaders led by the Kaptama area member of the county assembly Peter Cherui condemned the incident and called for the setting up of a police post in the area.
