Angry farmers torch their own coffee

Nyeri - Angry coffee farmers in Nyeri have torched about 100 bags of parchment coffee worth millions of shillings.
The farmers drawn from Kagere Coffee factory were complaining that they were being forced to sell their coffee through the Othaya Coffee Farmers’ society yet they preferred to sell independently to a miller in Thika Town.
“We are tired of this co-operative society because it has already oppressed us for many years and only pays KES 30 per kilo of fresh coffee,” said Charles Maina, the coffee factory’s chairman.

Earlier, two lorries that were transporting their coffee to Thika were intercepted and confiscated by police in Karatina Town.
The lorries were only released following the intervention of area MP, Mary Wambui.
The farmers said they want to freely sell their coffee just like their macadamia colleagues.
