Albinos want witchdoctors banned

25 March 2015, 18:40 Godfrey Olukya

Kampala - Albinos in Uganda have requested the government to ban witchdoctors because they have intentions of killing them.

There are 25 000 albinos in the country who claim that that they are living in fear because traditional healers are after their body parts.

Their body parts are reportedly used to make charms for those who want to get rich quick.

''We are in fear of being abducted and killed by witchdoctors. They claim that our body parts are used to make charms,'' said Ali Muwata, a leader of albinos in Kampala.

Muwata said that Uganda should emulate Tanzania and ban witchdoctors and save their lives.

He said, ''We request our country to come to our aid by banning witchdoctors like Tanzania. They are imposters who deceive people that our body parts can be used to make them rich.''

The albinos also claim that they are marginalized. One of them, Stella Acaya said, ''We are discriminated in schools, taxis and most public places. Albino children are avoided by normal children who even refuse sharing desks with them in class.''

She said that some taxis do not allow them to board saying they may scare away other passengers.

An official from the gender ministry, Paul Ogwang warned witchdoctors against killing albinos.

He said that the albinos request will be discussed by relevant authorities and relevant measures taken.
