Nairobi - A chief abducted and killed by Al Shabaab militia had a KES 4 million ransom on his head.
Muktar Maalim Ibrahim was killed by the militia Thursday evening after he was kidnapped early Thursday by the militia and taken into Somalia.
He was the chief of Arabia location.
The motive for his murder was not yet clear as he was the only one abducted by the militia after they stopped a bus in which he was travelling in together with others while heading for a Baraza in Mandera town.
It also emerged that a search party sent for him had been told to produce KES 4 million to secure his release.
Mandera County Commissioner Alex Ole Nkoyo confirmed the incident.
" Yes, he was killed unfortunately by his kidnappers even after we sent in a search party to save him, he told News24 on phone.
" The motive is not known. There was ransom asked for his release but they reacted with haste and killed him," he added.
The killing adds to a long list of murders in the County which has been infested by a wave of Shabaab attacks in the last two years.
Last year alone, over 100 people were killed thanks to Shabaab attacks in the area and local leaders have called for the government to deal with the threat.
The government is currently fast-tracking a plan to have a wall built on the border with Somalia to try reduce attacks.
