Police officers in Malindi are investigating the cause of a road accident which claimed life of a middle aged man leaving several others with injuries at Gede area along Mombasa - Malindi highway on Thursday night.
The accident involved a matatu and a lorry.
Malindi traffic police commander Bernard Ibaya said the matatu was traveling from Watamu to Malindi and the lorry, from Malindi to Gede when drivers of the two vehicles lost control and swerved out of the road.
Ibaya said five people were injured during the night incident but one died when receiving treatment. The others escaped unhurt among them the lorry driver.
He said according to early reports, the two drivers were trying to avoid a head on collision when the accident occurred. They veered off the road to the forest where they knocked trees.
"It was at night and there were no many people to explain exactly what they saw but because both vehicles followed different sides of the road, they could have been avoiding a head on collision," he noted.
The base commander said that the two vehicles might also have been over speeding before the accident occurred.
He said they are waiting to get more information from survivors who are still undergoing treatment at Malindi district hospital.
Ibaya cautioned drivers against flouting traffic laws especially at night saying those found will be prosecuted.
The body of the deceased was taken to Malindi private star hospital mortuary.
