At least twelve people are fighting for their lives in Tawfiq Hospital after they were involved in a fatal road accident at Club 28 area along Malindi Lamu road on Saturday.

The injured passengers were in a Matatu which was travelling from Malindi to Marereni where it knocked a wall of Club 28 when the Matatu driver tried to avoid knocking a taxi which emerged from nowhere to the highway.

According to eye witness Rodgers Agambo, “The matatu was over speeding and the taxi driver did not look left and right before getting to the Highway and so Matatu driver tried to avoid the accident forcing the vehicle to knock club 28's wall. The driver's right leg was totally broken and several others were seriously injured."

"We managed to pull them out of the vehicle, where some were stuck and took them to Tawfiq Hospital,” added Agambo.

Agambo blamed the taxi which was being driven by a foreigner, for flouting traffic rules as he did not consider the approaching passenger vehicle before getting to the road prompting the accident.

“I think these foreigners are not informed on traffic rules when they come to our country because of the way the taxi driver did was purely unprofessionally,” he noted.

Malindi traffic Boss Benard Ibaya Inchebere confirmed the incident and urged drivers to be careful and obey traffic rules.

He said some of the passengers had fractures on their legs, others suffered deep cuts on their heads and bruises.

Inchebere said they were still at Tawfiq Hospital where they are being treated.

The traffic Boss warned drivers against flouting roads rules which he said mostly causes roads accidents.

“The tax driver failed to consider the approaching passenger vehicle before getting to the road and the Matatu driver was over speeding,” he noted.
