Nyahururu - An administration police officer died of a bullet wound after he accidentally shot himself while cleaning a firearm at Ziwani estate in Nyandarua County.
Musa Kiplangat Barmassai, who was serving as an AP senior sergeant, shot himself under unclear circumstances at 3am Friday while cleaning a ceska pistol at a friend’s house.
Confirming the incident, Nyandarua North DCIO, Kavete Kulova said that the deceased was helping his 67-year-old friend who is a Nairobi-based businessman and a licensed firearm holder, Papius Thuku Kinyua, to clean his pistol.
Kulova said that the two had spent the entire night drinking at a bar in Nyahururu town before deciding to go to the businessman’s house in Ziwani estate at around 2:30am and on arrival, they decided to clean the firearm.

“Due to his drunken state, the officer might have removed the magazine but left a bullet in the chamber which launched while he was dismantling it for cleaning. Because the bullet went through his palm and into his left thigh and he bled profusely for three hours before he succumbed to injuries,” said the DCIO.
Kulova said that the businessman tried to administer first aid unsuccessfully before calling for an ambulance from a private hospital in Nyahururu but on arrival, the doctor pronounced the officer dead.
He said that police officers will carry on a normal inquest while Thuku will be charged for tampering with his firearm while drunk.
“It is very wrong for one to temper with a firearm and therefore we are going to charge him for tempering with his firearm while drunk,” added Kulova.
The body was taken to the Nyahururu District Hospital Mortuary awaiting post mortem.
