Nyeri - Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers recovered an AK47 rifle and ten rounds of ammunition from suspected poachers in Aberdare forest on Monday evening.
Central region police boss, Larry Kyeng reported that the officers were on patrol in the forest when they met five men who were carrying a luggage.
While addressing the press in his office in Nyeri town, Kyeng said the officers also recovered an axe, clothes, maize flour and salt which he suspected was to be used in luring the wild animals.
He however said the suspects escaped on seeing the police but left their belongings behind.
Efforts of arresting them were futile but Kyeng said police are pursuing them as he exuded confidence that the suspects will be arrested and arraigned in court of law.
In regard to security matters within Central region, the police chief disclosed that police interns from Kiganjo Police College have been deployed to beef up security.
He said cases of crime had reduced since the deployment.
