Beetroot lowers blood pressure

10 December 2012, 15:41 Kelvin Mureithi

Many people suffer from a number of lifestyle diseases due to blood impurities, and some even lose their lives in such circumstances.

High blood pressure is one of the most feared lifestyle diseases.

But have you ever thought of getting rid of all that without incurring huge cost?

Beetroot might just be all you need.

Beetroot is a dark-red root vegetable that can be eaten either raw or cooked.

It can also be used to prepare beetroot juice.

According to Meru Level Five Hospital Nutritionist Lucy Wanja, most lists of super foods don’t include beet juice but research shows that it belongs right up there together with salmon and blueberries.

Beet juice needs to be included in the nutritionist’s top list because it helps increase stamina, improve the flow of blood and reduce blood pressure.

Wanja says that beet juice is one of the richest sources of antioxidants and nitrates that can improve blood pressure and blood flow throughout the body including the brain, heart and muscles.

A diet rich in beet juice is a natural remedy for lower blood pressure and also heart health booster.

She also says that drinking about two cups of beet juice daily reduces chances of acquiring  high blood pressure in healthy adults, suggesting that dietary nitrates have a beneficial effect on blood flow and could be a natural approach to reducing the risk of heart disease.

But the most amazing thing is that despite beetroot being a cure to lifestyle diseases, not many people have ever tasted it.

This is due to ignorance about the plant on different grounds which are best known to each individual.

Ken Mwenda, a resident of Meru says that even if the plant could be a cure to everything, he will never taste it because it looks awful.

He says that he once saw his elder brother take beet juice and just wondered what good the tasteless juice can do to the human body.

Erick Mwiti is a farmer from Githongo location, Meru Central District in Meru County who grows beetroots for sale.

He says that he has set aside a quarter acre piece of land where he grows the beets but the challenges he faces is the lack of ready market for the vegetable.

The only people who buy the plant are fruit vendors who use it to make beet juice.

Mary Mugure, a fruit vendor says it is on rare occasions that people come to her fruit stall asking for beetroot.

She points out that though some people ask for beet juice, they request for it to be blended with other juices like orange juice or mango juice.

At Mugure’s stall, there are many beets but she only uses them to prepare juice because no one has ever shown interest in them.

The question is, do people have to suffer from diseases which they can prevent with little or no cost at all?

We need to take care of ourselves and keep our bodies safe from diseases by taking herbal foods such as beet root.

Many people have lost their lives due to high blood pressure, and we just sit and watch as friends and family members suffer from such diseases due to ignorance.

It’s high time we controlled blood pressure by consuming beetroot.
