Nairobi - A teenage girl from Kahuhia Girls Secondary School in Murang'a town died on Tuesday afternoon, following a road accident involving a school bus and a truck along the Nakuru, Nairobi Highway.
The school bus, belonging to Murang’a Secondary school, was transporting students from Kahuhia and Vidhu Ramji Schools after they finished their performance in a music gala in Nakuru.
According to an eyewitness, Gilbert Mathenge, the driver of the bus was overtaking a truck when it collided with another oncoming truck.
“The school bus was trying to overtake a lorry before it hit the other track which was moving at a high speed,” he said.
A total of 16 students were rushed to St. Mary's mission hospital in critical condition, while the driver of the school bus was rushed to Rift Valley General Hospital.
The school bus is said to have to have been carrying 56 students, 39 of whom escaped with minor injuries.
Kinuthia Mbugua, Nakuru County governor, visited the students at the hospital and urged school bus drivers to be more careful when they are transporting students.
“Drivers have to be on the look out because we can not afford to lose any more lives of the young ones,” he said.
