Nairobi - Grief has engulfed Rumuruti Township, in Laikipia County after a 90-year-old woman perished in a house fire.
Regina Gathoni died following an inferno that burnt down tens of timber houses on Wednesday night.
The fire that left about 38 families homeless was said to have been caused by electric fault.
Mary Nyawira, one of the victims, said nothing was salvaged in the houses as the fire was spreading fast and there were no fire fighters to help put it off.
A posho mill, hardware shops, salons and retail shops were some of the business premises that were gutted down.
“Our properties have been reduced to ashes and nothing we could have done. We don’t have a fire fighting engine in this area. We urge the County Government to invest in disaster preparedness equipments,” said Nyawira.
The charred remains of the granny were removed to Nanyuki Referral Hospital mortuary.
