8 things a young man needs to have before leaving home

20 July 2016, 08:08 Solomon Opala

To our kids, home is a training ground for life in the world that is more hostile and unforgiving for laggards and the unwise son. Before you release your boys to face life, make sure they have been taught and possess the following things:

They know who they are

Before they leave the nest, boys should have been shown love and acceptance and taught that their value is not dependent on the friends, money or success they get. They are able to walk away from people and situations that diminish who they are and not feel that they have to conform to peer pressure.

They have a career

The boy needs to have a skill and career that is growing and continuously developing. This ensures that his finances are growing. Many decisions in life are dependent on financial security. One way to secure your future is by investing in a skills set that is marketable or one that can make him self-employed.

Understand money matters

He needs to have a positive work ethic and not be given to get rich quick schemes. These are ways the young people get entrapped in debt and financial ruin. Top on the list of dangers is gambling and unplanned debt to buy consumables and not investing in assets.

Overcome addictions

The young lad needs to have escaped or overcome addictions like alcohol and drug abuse. These usually begin at secondary school level and continue with some people for the rest of their lives. With loving and understanding parents, these challenges can be overcome and insulate the boy from future peer pressure and negative additions.

Understand and honour women

The boy needs to understand that girls are not toys and that he should not play with their emotions and bodies. Using women and dumping them sets pace for his life. Avoid casual dating and only date for purpose of marriage and not a pastime.

Time management

One thing that will make the difference between success and failure is time management. If you teach them by example how to respect time and be diligent and organized with tasks, you would have saved them several years of agony.

Know how to pray

One important thing you cannot fail to teach your boys is how to pray. With prayer, they can access the greatest Dad of the universe who is everywhere and has a solution to every problem. He is a loving father to all of us and his lines of communication are always open. If one knows how to pray, they cannot fail to progress in life.
