Kampala - Over 500 students in western Uganda's secondary school have today been indefinitely suspended for holding a strike and destroying school property worth millions of shillings over being denied to watch a football match between Manchester United and Arsenal last Saturday.

According to the school authorities, the school has a DSTV dish and once in a while allows students to watch premier league matches but on that day they wanted the senior 6 students to revise for national examinations papers which they were to seat today.

However, some students escaped from school to  nearby trading centre and watched the match from video halls.
''On returning to the school, they learnt that the names of those who had escaped had been recorded down. They went wild and started beating up teachers and destroying school property.''said area police commander Bosco Arapo.

They set fire on some buildings and destroyed animals and plants on school farm.

Arapo said that among those beaten seriously was the school deputy head teacher ,who was beaten into a comma and is now  admitted in Kabale hospital.

Police went in yesterday to stop the strike and for the whole day was in running battles with the students. It however managed to restore order and today the students were given suspension letters and sent home.

Arapo said that senior 6 students, who are seating for national examinations have been advised to be coming from outside the school.
