5 secrets to making your new relationship work

23 November 2015, 18:50 Shakila Alivitsa

Nairobi - You have a new relationship. How do you make it work?

Keep the future out of the equation

You feel like they are the one? Don’t start talking about babies, marriage and what you can both invest in. Let the relationship breathe as you feel it out because you might just be the one to change your mind. The person you date is usually a fake, the real them usually comes out when the both of you are official.

Don’t get in too deep. Like I said just like you were faking a lot of things about yourself to reel them in does not mean you abandon self because you are now taken. Continue being independent and doing your own things. Relationships die because people lose themselves and their spontaneity as individuals. You feel like you should be around this person all the time. Do not forget your friends and family and what you like doing. Spontaneity comes from you continuing to do what you like.

Keep it a secret

I see people telling other people their business but the best way to make a relationship last is when no one else knows about it. There is no one else telling you how you could improve it or change something; no one telling you how someone was once a whore or slept with so and so. No one telling you how they know someone from somewhere; just keep it to yourself. No one should even be aware if you are still alive or celibate.

There is no need for PDA

Holding hands in Nairobi streets can be frustrating because there are just too many people trying to go somewhere and you look like idiots trying to hold hands. Also your partner might just not be comfortable doing it. Just because they do not want to hold hands or hug in public does not mean they feel any less about you. They are just trying to be private.

If you have a problem or a thank you; say it

Relationships also fail out of lack of communication. If your partner does something nice, appreciate them. If you have a problem, open up and let it be known. If you want something to change, let it also be known. Nothing was ever fixed from closed mouths.
