4 tips to make long distance relationships work

15 January 2016, 08:11 Agneta Murii

Distance can strengthen and deepen a relationship in important ways. However, long distant relationships can also be hard work. considering you have to contend with seeing the other person once in a while.

Here are tips to make it work:

1. Set up healthy communication pattens early
They say out of sight out of mind. For both of you to maintain a good communication strategy, talk about how you talk. Discuss and agree on some of your communication mechanism as a couple. This can help set realistic expectations and avoid miscommunication frustration and anxiety.

2. Give each other space
This might sound contradicting considering the fact that you do not see each other on daily basis.Talking to your partner should be a priority, but not your only priority. Do not spend all of your spare time talking or texting. Also, don't expect your partner to respond straight away to every text you send.

3. Learn how to approach conflict
Conflict is inevitable in a relationship, but being in a long distant relationship makes managing conflict well even more difficult. Learn some basic conflict management strategies and discuss them with your partner before you find yourself in mid-night fights.

4. Learn to control jealousy
A little jealousy every now and then is not unusual in a long distant relationship. However, uncontrolled jealousy can lead to a destructive combination of suspicion, possessiveness, insecurity, anger and shame. If you are feeling jealous, figure out how to control it before it controls you. It's never easy but it can be done.
