4 suspected gangsters shot dead by police

25 January 2015, 16:28 Wangui Joseph

Nairobi -  Kirinyaga police officers have gunned down four suspected robbers at Mutithi trading centre along Mwea-Makutano road.

The four were killed by special crime prevention unit who had followed the suspects from Ngurubani area.

The gangsters while armed with two AK 47 rifles were overwhelmed by the police following a shooting exchange.

Mwea OCPD, Titus Yoma said the officers got wind of the suspects heading to the area to commit a crime and trailed them to the busy Ngurubani market

He said on realizing that they were being trailed, the suspects started firing at the officers and a shootout ensued.

Police recovered seven rounds of ammunition from the suspects.

Yoma said two of the suspects had been identified with one hailing from Maragua in the neighboring Murang’a County while the other was from Karatina in Nyeri County.

" Our forensic experts are on the way to examine and determine the identity of the remaining two suspects as investigations continue to establish if the guns recovered have been used to commit robberies elsewhere," Yoma said.

Residents claimed that the suspects could have been responsible for last week’s armed robbery at a soda store where they made off with KES 700,000 in cash while another trader was robbed KES 800,000.
