4 holiday ideas for the kids

07 April 2015, 18:35 Shakila Alivitsa

Nairobi -  I do not go into town much but I have heard that the new traffic routes are now effective, and I do hope by the time I go into town they will have already sorted the whole arrangement out. Because the only thing that I love about April is less traffic since some people are not going to school.

After Easter, it has finally set in that the kids are here to stay for one month. You did not like it at all coming after work to spy them walking across the road with that group of children from that neighborhood that you did not like at all. You are at wits end because someone decided to ban tuition so they are just running up and down having nothing to do.

I am here to give you a few ideas on what you can do with them, some may be cost effective others not so.

If you run a business that is where your children should be

Gone are the times that you have to think of children as just that. If you take them as idiots with little sense then they might just prove you right and just be that. If you want your children to have skills besides those of playing shakes on the side walk give them something to do at your business. Even lifting and clearing stuff of the floor teaches them responsibility.

The other day I went to the neighborhood supermarket and the children of the owner were manning the tills. I am not talking about teenagers here but one was a girl about 7 or 8 and the other was a boy aged about 11 of 12. They had a calculator with them and they were even fighting over who would be next to serve the customer. They might have not been quick or efficient enough (I had to help with figuring out my change) in serving me but I admired their parents in the approach they had taken in commandeering their time and idleness.

Teach them something new

It is not just about educating them on math and chemistry. Try something different and nurture your child’s talents. It may be in cooking or art or even making things. You do not even have to take them to a prestigious place if you cannot afford. Ask people who are already doing it like a jewelry artist. Ask if they would like an apprentice. First they might welcome the free labor and your child will have something to talk about at the end of the day other than the latest video game they would like you to purchase. They might end up spending their free time perfecting the art that they are learning. With children it is easy to cultivate and deviate their interests.

Get them to volunteer

It might be at your local church   or at a children’s home but a boon is that you also know they have supervision. You also do not get to pay for anything other than their lunch if it is full day and transportation. Your children also learn to think about other people other than themselves.

If they refuse because they would rather watch Cartoon Network, there are two routes to take. Take away something they like until they participate. Or bribe them- tell them you will get them something at the end of the month. Do not lie though because they will not do it next time. You want them to look forward to it the next time you propose it.

Get them a tutor

This was my mother’s favorite. I remember when I was in school we had tuition for two weeks, but I knew while others were celebrating the other two weeks, I was getting extras.  School tuition might be banned but you can get them a tutor on the subjects they are not good at.
