4 family members hacked

05 April 2013, 16:35 Tony Karomo

Residents of Koongo Ka Mwonyo village, Buuri Location in Tigania East district are reeling in shock after a young man hacked four family members to death leaving another admitted at Tigania Mission Hospital.

Peter M’Ampuria, 60, Susan M’Ampuria, 44, and their children Francis Mutabari, 23, and Jamlick Mutethia, 16, were allegedly stabbed to death by Stanley Libono, 24, killing three of them instantly while one succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

Speaking at the scene of crime, area OCPD Charles Kosgei said the suspect is being sought by police as he is still at large.

“We were informed of the killings yesterday evening. Three victims died on the spot while one succumbed to death while undergoing treatment. Those dead were the assailant’s uncle, Uncle’s wife and his two cousins,” Kosgei said.

The OCPD said that the motive of the murder has not yet been established.

He lamented the rising cases of murder in the area which he attributed to family land disputes.

“We have been receiving two to three murder reports almost every week. This is quite alarming and we urge residents to hold their tempers,” the OCPD said.

He pointed out that there is need to fast track the land adjudication process to curb the conflicts.

“The process of issuing of title deeds is in the adjudication level. This is what has been fuelling deadly disputes,” said Kosgei.

Buuri Chief John Mamira said that the involved families have been having disputes in the past some of which had been resolved through his office.

“Last year, two members of this family we involved in an assault case. One of them was stabbed but the case was withdrawn from the police and settled at family level,” the Chief said.

Chief Mamira cited the rivalry between the families as the likely cause and blamed most of the violent disputes in the area on land disputes.

They called on residents to seek ways of resolving disputes rather than resulting to violence.
