3,000 policemen as thousands head for CORD Uhuru Park rally
23 September 2015, 12:57
Nairobi - There is heavy police presence in and around Uhuru Park as the CORD rally on the teachers strike is set to take place.
It is estimated that around 3,000 police officers are either close to the venue, at it, or on standby to offer security to the event.
" We have police all over the venue and we urge those attending the rally to be peaceful and respect others who are taking care of their own businesses," Police Spokesman Charles Owino say.
The CORD coalition is keen to stress the need for the government to pay teachers their 50/60% payrise effected by the Labour court.
The government says it has no money while teachers say they will not back down on the ongoing strike which has lasted 4 weeks already.
Expected at the rally are senior CORD leaders, Teachers Union leaders as well as Labour leaders from the Central Organization of Trade Unions COTU.
