3 ways to ensure work does not kill your relationship

18 November 2015, 19:17 Shakila Alivitsa

Nairobi - Work can easily kill your relationship. Here's how not to.

Make time, find time

Never say that you have too much to do that you cannot make time for someone who you are meant to be with. You were able to find time to date them and create that spark that attracted them to you. Now that you are in a relationship and have them, you do not have time? That is a minor excuse a lot of people use. You found time then, find it now as well.

Create a habit of looking at your partner as a client

Getting used to someone can make you start treating them as a secondary option. In that way they see it as you not appreciating them and that is how a lot of relationship get torn up. They start getting the appreciation from elsewhere. Look out for your partners interests just as hard as you look out for those of your client. Rememebr what they require from you on a daily basis and try your best to deliver it for them. It may be a listening ear or someone who remembers the little details that reminds them that you have them on your mind even if you are not there.

If the situation changes, adapt to it well

Long work hours, heavier work load and a busier schedule will make you not pay attention and just go on autopilot. You forget! If you see it coming, take time to think how you are going to make it work. Even the smallest window helps; you do not need grand gestures and over planning.  If you get a free hour, call your partner and ask if they are interested in having a lunch date or something. It is an impromptu date and it will get them excited. Do not sit down and start worrying about how you will get time to take them on a date. Grab every small opportunity you get to remind them you are thinking of them.
