3 reasons women keep secrets from their men

11 January 2016, 19:02 Shakila Alivitsa

Nairobi - You see long time ago, people used to come and sit down together and table their moneys or pay slips in order for the bills to be properly designated. They would discuss how much each should pay and whether the least earning should even contribute.

Those were our mothers and some did not even work because the pay she would get as a secretary was so small it could not even pay her bus fare to work for a whole month. She would end up staying at home and being a housewife.

Today’s ladies on the other hand, go to work; by 4am she is out of the house and by the time she comes back its eight at night. She is earning, but how much is she earning? Couples like playing cat and mouse games-you burn the pay slip because they can easily find it in the wardrobe or if it is directly debited to your account, you make sure they never see your withdrawals and estimate.

Why will a woman not tell man what she is earning when he might not even make demands on her salary?

Our mothers told us to always have something the husband does not know about

Not many men know this but our mothers had a conversation with us. Most men are not good with money and then there are those who are high risk takers. You end up finding out he took out a bad loan on everything you own. When the situation becomes bad, you get shockers and even find the home you live in is no longer yours. That nest you hid from your husband is what will save you during such a crisis. He did not bet on what he did not know about. That is why my salary will be a secret because when you pay all the bills and I put a portion of my money in secret emergency accounts, or invest in some real estate; it will save the family when you mess up or if you/I get in a situation that is when the money is used. If such a situation never arises, then there is the vacation you go to when the kids are no longer around.

You do not want to be asked to cover some of the bills because you can and now he knows

When he comes up with an estimate and sees you buying a couple of groceries and paying your own fare; he will be silent. But when he gets an actual figure and sees how much more you could be doing instead of buying weaves and more shoes-you don’t want to have that conversation. Some men handle their woman’s hair expenses, wardrobe, fare or gas and still pay all the bills because he thinks maybe she does not earn that much. So there is no problem. But wait until he knows what that amount is; you don’t want him to take away one of the luxuries you can handle yourself but just don’t want to.

You never want to hear, ‘what do you ever do with your money?’ or ‘where does all that money go?’

A woman, who looks good, is a woman who spends. As a man that is a fact that you are going to have to accept. When you choose a ‘model’ girlfriend who looks good on your arm just know her salary goes to the gym, the weave, the make-up and what not. As a girlfriend I never want to have that conversation with a boyfriend or a husband. I feel guilty enough on my own when I buy, you heaping it some more on the guilt will not be helping us.

And don’t tell me you look good enough without make-up. It is not that we are ugly underneath it; just that make up is like adding sugar to tea.

If you are not good at saving, you and the man will always be having those monthly conversations

Not all women are good at saving or investing in the right things. If she sees a shoe, she will impulse buy-they can just never be enough. Every woman has that one thing she will impulse buy, it does not have to be shoes and when you don’t want the man to have those conversations with you. You hide them or make sure the deliveries are not brought when he is at home. Then when he sees it, for example a new dress, you don’t ask how good you look. You act like it is not the first time you are wearing it, ‘are you sure you never saw it? I always wear it. How come you don’t remember?’

But do try and be a good saver, your man might not always be around. If he asks to invest some of your money for you, you don’t have to give everything but a percentage especially if you know he is good with money. Don’t take all your money and give a husband whom you know is not good with it at all. Then ask to know what he put the money in and you would like to see the papers.
