3 reasons why Uhuru must save Burundi

13 May 2015, 14:20 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta is in Tanzania for crisis talks over the state of affairs in Burundi.

President Kenyatta left the country for Dar es Salaam Tanzania, Wednesday morning to attend a special summit convened to seek solutions to the Burundi crisis and arrived there just past 11 PM local time.

The Extra Ordinary Summit of Heads of State was convened by East Africa Community chairman President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania. The unrest was sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to run for a third five-year term.

The president, being the head of the senior-most nation in the region will be looked upon to help deal with the issue and help seek a concluding argument to end the crisis.

Here are three reasons why Uhuru must help seek a solution.

1. Kenya is a big brother

Just like South Sudan and Somalia, Kenya must take the front seat in negotiations because the country is the big brother and must take responsibility for the happenings in Burundi. Being sat at the top of the tree is important and it comes with such for Uhuru. He must do something for Burundi.

2. No need for another Rwanda

The less said about Rwanda the better. The circumstances might be different but a full blown war is not needed for the stability of the region.

3. Uhuru's star will rise

Nothing brightens the CV of any sitting president as much as being at the forefront of peace efforts and that will do Uhuru a world of good. He needs it, especially given his record from the case at the International Criminal Court ICC. Many people would love to do business with a reformed former convict who now preaches peace. If you get the point.
