3 in 10 female sex workers in Kenya have HIV/AIDS

12 October 2015, 13:27 Samuel Kisika

Nairobi – A report released by the National AIDS Control Council (NACC) has revealed that at least three in ten female sex workers across the 47 counties are infected with HIV/AIDS.

The report says there are over 133 675 female sex workers in the country where the numbers vary across the counties, with Nairobi recording the highest number of over 29 494 prostitutes and North Eastern the lowest number of about 2 030.

Out of Nairobi’s 29 494 female sex workers, 39% do not believe that abstinence could protect them from HIV, 23% don’t think they could get the killer disease from unprotected anal sex while another 23% don’t believe that there is management of HIV.

“Nearly 30% of new infections are among female sex workers and their reproductive health needs are unmet because their work is stigmatized. This is a hidden population that many of us ‘love to hate’ but can greatly determine our fate,” states the report.

However, the Health ministry has assured its collaboration with other partners to engage persons infected with HIV including sex workers to help reduce further infections through distribution of condoms, provision of treatment facilities, and awareness to victims on HIV management among other measures.

For instance, NACC’s Kenya Aids Strategic Framework 2014/15 - 2018/19 has focused on involving reformed sex workers to reach their peers with information on HIV as its priority precautionary intervention.

HIV infection is worsening due to free movement of infected population defaulting treatment to endangering their lives and their clients.
