230 livestock swept away by raging floods

Nairobi - A heavy downpour that lasted eight hours from Monday midnight has killed 205 goats, 10 camels and 15 donkeys in Oldonyiro location, Isiolo County.
The raging floods and seasonal rivers also swept away 25 houses leaving families in the cold.
Confirming the incident, Isiolo County Commissioner George Natembeya said nobody died during the incident as he asked residents to relocate to higher grounds and on the hills.
He said road network from Oldonyiro to Isiolo County Headquarters had also been destroyed and travelers were using an alternative route through Nanyuki town, a distance of over 200 kilometers.

He added that Kenya Red Cross Society would take food and household items including beddings, mosquito nets and utensils to the affected families.
He asked chiefs to monitor the situation and report for quick response.
Red Cross Society branch Coordinator, Gitonga Mugambi said only his organization was responding to the crisis and urged the county Government to allocate funds to assist the needy.
Mugambi who is also a member of County Disaster Response Team blamed the County Government for failing to prepare adequately hence shifting the burden to Non-Governmental Organizations and the National Government.
