Kampala - Police in Uganda's eastern town of Mbale have mounted operations to arrest female students who turn into prostitutes at night.
So far, 21 students from the various universities, other institutions of higher learning and secondary schools in the town have been arrested in the last two days.
According to the officer in charge of Mbale police, Peter Mugabi, they decided to round up the sex workers after learning that some of them were students.
He said that the student prostitutes usually operate on Republic street and Naboa road.
Parents in the town have commended the police for carrying out the operation because it will deter other female students from perpetuating the vice.
''We support the police for arresting the students who are shaming us by selling their bodies at night. Those arrested should be given harsh punishments,'' said Abu Baker Masaba, a parent.
