21 school girls impregnated in Narok South

29 April 2016, 14:06 Geoffrey Kimagut

Narok - About 21 girls from primary and secondary schools in Loita area, Narok South Sub County have been impregnated and forced to drop out of school.

The girls aged between 12 and 16 years were learners in Ntarakuai primary school, Ilkerin Boarding Primary School and Loita High School before they were impregnated.

Narok Children Officer Julius Ngoko confirmed that six girls have already delivered while 15 were pregnant.

“Ten girls are from Ntarakuai Primary, six Loita High School and five girls from Ilkerin Boarding,” said Ngoko who spoke to the media in his office yesterday.

Ngoko blamed the parents for collaborating with the culprits and secretly planning to marry off their girls with suitors who impregnate them before marrying them off.

However, Ngoko warned that the government will deal with such people saying they are denying the children their democratic right to education.

The Children officer said the girls got pregnant during the long November and December holiday.

He said his department had launched investigations to arrest and bring to book those  responsible for the pregnancies.

“We encourage the girls to go back to school after they deliver so that they can attain their dreams,” he said.

A research conducted by News 24 revealed that the number has been greatly increasing every single year despite of numerous campaigns conducted by the government in collaboration with Non-governmental organizations to sensitize wananchi on the dangers of the same.

Children Office Social Worker Ms Elizabeth Kasura said the office has handled over 70 cases of teenage pregnancies this year and added that many more cases have not been reported to his office.
