A 20 year old man drowned in River Yala at Bar-Kokwiri village, East Yimbo location in Bondo district this morning when a foot bridge he was constructing collapsed unexpectedly.
Benjamin Ooko Omondi was working on the foot bridge together with his three other colleagues when he met his untimely death after the footbridge they were constructing across the river caved in.
Bondo OCPD Patrick Mang’oli who confirmed the incident said the three, who survived, swam to the river bank for safety as the deceased drowned as they helplessly watched.
Efforts by villagers and the police to retrieve the body have been futile given that the river is crocodile infested and it is also feared that the body might be covered under the water by the wreckage of the bridge.
Mang’oli revealed that they have contacted experts from Gumba Construction Company which had employed the deceased as a casual worker to help them remove the wreckage to aid in the search for the body.
The police boss urged those residing along the banks of river Yala to give report should they come across any unknown body.
He however assured the bereaved family that the police was doing everything possible to recover the body and appealed for calm as they carry on the exercise.
