20 months on, I return to Westgate

Nairobi - 20 months after an attack that nearly claimed Eric Njogu's life, he returned to the Westgate Mall on its re-opening
Njogu was among the lucky ones to get away from the September 2013 attack without a physical scar. He and others hid inside a mobile phone accessories store on the mall's first floor until police rescued them.
The attack by Al Shabaab militia saw 67 people killed on the ill fated Saturday and Njogu, a taxi driver who was dropping a customer at the mall says he remembers every facet of the events on the day.
" I remember the gunshots as they came in and I remember everything like it was yesterday. I remember us hiding, the non-stop gunshots and explosions and the bloodshed".
" It was horrendous and something I will not forget in a long time. It was a feeling of helplessness as I could not do anything at all to help all those killed. I will live with it forever," he says.
On Saturday, the mall was re-opened to the public after 15 months of construction and Njogu was happy to be among the first to go to the newly revamped mall.
" I was happy to go back there to pay respects to the dead as well as those that were injured. Also, I went back to show the terrorists that even though they killed 67 and scarred others for life, we will not bow down to them. We will remain united and live our lives without fear," he added.
